What Does a PRV Do?

In a common rail diesel system, fuel is stored at extremely high pressure (typically 1,600–2,000 bar) in the fuel rail before being delivered to the injectors. The Pressure Relief Valve acts as a safety mechanism — if rail pressure rises beyond the designed threshold (due to a faulty pressure regulator, blocked return line, or pump fault), the PRV opens to divert excess fuel back to the tank, protecting the entire fuel system from catastrophic failure.
